Insights – with Fitri

What kind of teaching technique do you think the most effective way to motivate students skill in speaking?

It depends on the student! It’s important to know what the student’s goals are in order to find the proper motivation for speaking. Once I know their hobbies and interests or business goals, I can tailor the lesson to focus on language they will actually use in their daily lives. Different students also learn in different ways. If a student is more of a visual learner then I will use more pictures or videos, while audio learners may prefer studying songs. I thoroughly enjoy that moment in teaching when students are having fun while being able to produce language that they could not previously.

What are the obstacles that you often face while you are teaching English?

They all have different experiences and backgrounds which is always interesting. I have met some amazing people while teaching and I find I can learn a lot from them.

What do you like about your students?

While grammar exercises are necessary it’s crucial to find a creative way to incorporate new grammar into the students memory. This is where the fun comes in. Writing and drawing comic books, doing role play and writing songs are a few activities that I use to get the creative juice flowing. Competitions and skits are especially entertaining for larger groups and Business English.

What do you do to stimulate students creativity while they’re having an English class?

I have taught students from Indonesia, Korea, Japan, South America and the Middle East. I find it fascinating to see how peoples native languages influence their English abilities, especially when it comes to pronunciation. I also love travelling and learning about different cultures so it’s a pleasure to hear about my students home-towns and customs.
